35 OLD BUFFALO BULLS WILL BE SHOT DOWN FROM THOSE IN LOCAL PARK

Number of Old Buffalo Bulls Passing into Age of Declination

WILL BE SHOT IN DEC.

Manner in Which Animals will be Killed Remains Unknown

According to Supt. W. E. D. McTaggart, of the National Buffalo Park here, between thirty and thirty-five buffalo bulls will be killed off sometime during December next. In fact the understanding is that the late Commissioner of Dominion Parks was ordered to have this done sometime ago, and on the recommendation of late Superintendent E. Ellis.

Supt. McTaggart states that in the event of this being done the old bulls will be shot down for they are now reaching such an age that the younger bulls are liable to kill them at anytime. It is a natural sequence with these monarchs of the plains, the weaker animals must submit to the rule of the strong and naturally this at anytime may prove too strenuous to those which have served their time. It is estimated that the oldest bulls in the park are from thirty to fifty years old.

Just what will be done with the head and skins of the animals is unknown at this time. The heads are valued at great price, some of them having sold in the past for as much as $500. The skins too are valuable and can be made use of in many ways. The meat will likely be made use of locally, in which event citizens will have their first taste of real buffalo meat.
