The Home of the Buffalo

————

Wainwright possesses one very unique attraction for tourists and visitors to the town and that is the "Buffalo Park." Here can be seen the largest herd of buffalo in the world, in fact the only one of any importance. The park covers several townships and is owned by the Dominion Government.

Thousands of strangers visit this park every year, many coming to the town for no other purpose. From the town to the park, which is only a couple of miles out, there is and excellent driveway, which the park authorities and now having lined with shade trees.

There are now over seven hundred head in the buffalo herd, and there are still one hundred to come from Montana. The buffalo are increasing very rapidly, sixty calves haiving been counted within a few weeks by Supt. Ellis and his staff.

Although the buffalo have been in captivity so long, some of them show at times that their primeval instincts still exist. They show no signs of alarm or agitation at people driving but will gallop madly away at the sight of anyone on horseback.

The park is in charge of Supt. Ellis who has been studying the habits of the buffalo for years, but he says: "I am always learning something new about them."
