The Buffalo Round-Up at Elk Park

Monarchs of the Plains Are Now in Corrals Ready for Shipment to New Home at Wainwright

————

Tuesday was a day to be remembered by those who were fortunate enough to be at Lamont on that day to see E. Simmons and his twenty-five riders corral the herd of 350 buffalo, that are to be moved from Elk Park to the new government park at Wainwright.

All hands were in readiness at an early hour and after having breakfast, they proceeded to the stable and mounted their steeds.

The party then, under the direction of Supt. Simmons, divided and with ten men, well mounted, on either side of the line fence, they proceeded about three miles south into Elk Park where the buffalo were located and in less than thirty minutes after the fence had been taken down, the large herd of buffalo, numbering 350 and also about 25 buffalo calves were driven 3 miles distance and safely corralled at Lamont, without an accident or any of the buffalo escaping.

Great credit is due Mr. Simmons for the skilful manner in which he has arranged for the safe handling of this herd of wild buffalo.

The corrals where the buffalo are now confined have been under construction for several months and are well prepared to withstand any onslaught these strong animals may make upon them, in an endeavor to once more roam the prairies. They are directly opposite the C. N. R. station and it is only one chance that some of us get in a lifetime to see a large herd of buffalo confined in close quarters, this is worth going many miles to see.

After the buffalo were safely corraled a number of photos were taken of the riders and buffalo, and the balance of the day was spent in sport, exhibitions of broncho busting, hurdle jumping, etc.

About the first of June these buffalo will be loaded on to cars especially built for transporting wild animals, and will be taken to their new home on the Grand Trunk Pacific.—Fort Saskatchewan Reporter.
