Community Connections Denwood and Wainwright are separate entities on common territory. Facilities and activities have been shared between camp and town with very favorable outcome, the Winter Carnival being at the top of the list. In May of 1988, the Town of Wainwright granted Camp Wainwright “the Freedom of the Town” in ceremonial splendor. Celebrations planned for the Camp’s 50th Anniversary have been equally divided between camp and town in a gesture of appreciation for the cooperative relationship that exists between the two communities. Generous financial assistance to many projects has been offered by Camp Wainwright over the years. The most recent 50 year heartache has been settled in cooperation with CNR, town, MD of Wainwright and DND in the completion of the long awaited solution for crossing the tracks between town and camp. Referred to as a grade separation, the overpass (over and under pictures pages 112 and 108) was officially opened in the fall of 1989. What a convenience! Previous to this, Camp had supplied funds to complete the road east of the gates to gain access to the second track crossing. This was the only route to camp while the two year construction of the $1.5 million overpass was in progress. In 1985 connections were final for the town of Wqainwright to be serviced by the Betty Lake resevoir for their water supply. Since its beginning, the camp water treatment plant has been capable of supplying a population of 30,000 but until this time had only serviced the camp and occasionally a portion of the town during summer months. The communiplex received funding from DND at different stages of its development. The pool was opened in 1984, later to be added were racquet ball courts and the dance academy studio. Donations were also forthcoming when artificial ice was to bless the Shell Arena in town. Present mayor of Wainwright, Roger Lehr believes that Camp Wainwright is a steadying influence on the town and MD; for the short while he has been mayor Roger says he has enjoyed good rapport with the camp and its CO LCol Lew Branum. During the research for this book, it is quite apparent that a high percentage of the people in all surrounding communities have at one time or another worked for Camp Wainwright. There is no doubt it has retained a stable and versatile employer status in this district. Time and space will not allow complete coverage of Camp’s community connections over the years. The following are but a few of the aspects and organizations that have shared in the camp's social and work related associations with its community: Annual Stampede Parade and Events | Buffalo Park Grazing Association Camp Winter Carnival | Hughenden Grazing Association Battle River Historical Society | South Park Grazing Association Fish and Game Association | Strawberry Plains Grazing Association Falcon Farm | All Sports Leagues and Associations Chamber of Commerce | All commercial and retail outlets Town Council | Disaster Services MD of Wainwright | Bingo RCSCC CAYUGA | Bowling Scouts and Guides | Dances Cubs and Brownies | Military Band concerts Educational Facilities | Ammunition demonstrations Veterinary Clinic | Weddings and Births Medical and Dental Facilities | Blood Donor Clinics Oil and Gas Industry | Terry Fox Run Red Cross | Poker Rallies Rod and Gun Club
