_________image_________ Camp Fire Department probably during the 60’s. Picture supplied by Bill Carsell who is presently a fireman at Camp but not in the photo. William (Bill) Carsell Jr. after serving as a volunteer with Town of Wainwright Fire Department for 16 years, started with the Camp Fire Department around 1975 at the new Hall. At present the staff operates 7 vehicles: 2 pumpers for building fires, 2 crash trucks for airport units, 2 range trucks for prairie fires, and a panel truck. The staff also operates the ambulance, driving medics to the scene. Camp and Town fire services exchange assistance when necessary, the most recent call being to control the fire at town’s newly completed Anglican Church (1990). They also join forces in disaster exercises for additional training in this area. Fire codes at camp are strictly enforced, regular fire inspection and fire safety instruction being part of the Department’s duties. In his 23 years at Camp Fire Department, Richard La Haye has accumulated many memories. He recalls #6 Hall with snow piled on his blankets in the morning or deer peering in the window. Once when visiting VIP’s necessitated a 20 gun salute, 4 big guns were positioned right by the #6 Hall. The first boom broke all the windows, the second knocked the nails out of the plaster board, the third vibrated some of the plaster loose, and by the twentieth… you can imagine! Staff is required to handle a wide range of emergency situations from air crashes to grass fires; they must be versatile and knowlegeable in every area. Duties include testing and repairing of fire safety equipment, instruction for newcomers, Fire Hall building and grounds mainteneance and supplying complete emergency service for the camp.
