HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE WARRIOR PAPER: (August 1952) There have been many changes during this year in Camp Wainwright. One year ago the three infantry battalions were under canvas, as were the LdSH (RC) and 1 RCHA. Contractors were erecting the buildings of the Stage One Development. Captain E.C. Brumwell, who is now in Korea with “C” Squadron had constructed a hot water heating apparatus. The first Blood Donor Clinic had been held in Camp resulting in success. The newly formed 14 Coy, RCASC had just completed a transportation job in which they had hauled a complete Bailey Bridge to Banff where it was assembled. The 23rd Field Squadron RCE which is now in Korea, were undergoing training out at Park Farm. 45 Camp Ordnance Railhead RCOC was then officially known as 10 Camp Ordnance Railhead. Camp Wainwright was under the command of Brig W.J. Megill DSO, DC, and had just been visited by the Minister of National Defence, Hon. Brooke Claxton. The Commander now is Brig J.E.C. Pangman, DSO, ED, and the 81st Field Regiment have taken the place of 1 RCHA. Most of the tents have been replaced by modern buildings, although a goodly percentage of the camp is still under canvas. The Fightin' 59th are the Park Farmers this year, instead of the 23 Field Squadron; and newcomers to the Brigade are the 56th Trasport Company RCASC. 6th TRUCK RODEO ELIMINATIONS: Camp Wainwright Skilled Driving Competition was held on 14 Aug 1952 in No. 1 Drill Hall and all drivers of the rank of Cpl or below, who had an accident free record for a year, were eligible to compete. This competition, which is part of the 6th Annual Truck Rodeo, was conducted in conjunction with the Joint SErvices Accident Prevention Programme DST/QMG, AHQ. The contest is country wide, designed to test the theoretical knowledge and practical skill of the drivers of the three Armed SErvices. 59th FIELD SAPPERS TRY NAGS FROM 4 SHU RANCH: (August 1952) Horses were taken out to Park Farm for the boys from the 59th Field RCE to ride, before the men leave for winter quarters. A little pinto colt seemed to be the highlight, posing for numerous pictures. THEY SHALL HAVE MUSIC…: The Western Command Band, led by Lt. A. Brown have played for many parades and Mess events at Camp Wainwright throughout the summer of '52, including the grad exercises of the second Junior NCO School in August. RCR CANTEEN: now serving french fries, burgers, sundaes, malts, hot dogs, and some mention of fricassied gopher tongues on rye! Chocolate bars or note paper costs 10 cents, pens 30 cents, T-shirts with crest $1.75 and sweat shirts $2.35. BRIG PANGMAN TO BE COMMANDER 27th BRIGADE: (Sept 1952) present commander of 25th CIBRG appointed to command 27th Canadian Infantry Brigade Group in Germany will replace Brig Walsh who becomes Director General of Military Training. Brig Rockingham will vacate the appointment of DGMT and will attend the Imperial Defence College in the UK. New commander of 25th CIBRG is Col. F.A. Clift, DSO, ED. DIESEL LOCOMOTIVE THROUGH WAINWRIGHT: (Sept 1952) Homeward bound workmen and soldiers were not surprised to find their way halted by a freight train on the crossing North of the main gate, until they noticed the gleaming yellow and green streamlined diesel locomotive standing at the head of the freight cars. Hunger overcame curiosity when the line of traffic began honking horns in irritation and the CNR crew, always obliging, broke the train at the crossing and the dielsel rumbled ahead far enough to let the traffic through. LOCAL COUNCIL A.C.S. of C FORMED: On September 28, 1952 after preliminary work had been done by Bill Wilkinson, Camp Fire Captain, a Local Council of the Amalgamated Civil SErvants of Canada was formed. This is not a union, members are not permitted to go on strike to realize their demands. The association will be the workers' spokesman, approaching departments in Ottawa to air workers' concerns and encourage adjustment when needed. BAILEY BRIDGE: Crossing the Ribstone Creek the new Bailey Bridge was constructed this summer of 1952 by 59 Independent Field Squadron, RCE.
